Multimedia systems are simply systems that play, view and process several media's, simultaneously or one at a time. An example of such a system, and one that concerns us, is the multimedia computer system. These systems are capable of playing sounds, display video and display images. They are able to do all these things either from the computers secondary storage or from the separate media like a CD or diskette. The development of multimedia systems has had an impact on society's methods of communication, computer software, use of computers, education and the Internet. The combination of media's opened up a new method of communicating. An example of this would be the introduction of multimedia encyclopaedias. These are encyclopaedias that are sold in CD format. These encyclopaedias contain text descriptions for words but also incorporate sound, images and video where appropriate. So a user can not only get a picture and description of, say a lion but can hear it roar and see video footage of it in its natural habitat.
